VEGAS 2009 - Get Some!

The University of Arizona A Team placed first in the Vegas Open club tournament this Spring, beating two teams ranked in the top 5 nationally. The club competed against SDSU, UC Davis-B, and Oregon on Day 1 of the tournament. The second day comprised of playing Sonoma State, UC Davis-A, Baylor (ranked 4) in the semi finals, and UC Santa Barbara (ranked 2) in the finals. The team went undefeated in the tournament.

Three players were also selected to the All Tournament team. Congrats to Katy DeBruin, Desiree Long, and "Most Valuable Player" Layne Castro!

A Team finishes 2nd in Home Tourney to DI girls

The Desert Thunder tournament was a success. The A team placed second to the "U of A Alumni" team composed of past and present U of A Division I players. The Arizona A Club team placed highest of all club teams at this tournament.

Incoming Freshman!! New students!! Girls who have never tried out before!! Girls who have!! Come join the UA Women's Volleyball Club for the 2008-2009 Season!!

Get on our e-mail list (for updates/reminders), meet officers, & learn about the club at:
Wildcat Night = Student Rec Center = August 25th = 6-9pm
Student Involvement Fair = UA Mall = August 28th = 10am - 1pm

Whether you can make it to the fairs or not, come to open gym to sharpen your skills, get back in shape, or just to have fun. These practices are free. Come get to know the returning girls and see if club volleyball is for you!

Tryouts start September 14th. Get the word out. Tell everyone you know that may be interested. As you may, or may not know, club volleyball is student funded, and there are A LOT of expenses throughout the season to pay for all of our coaching, tournaments, etc. That is why there is a try out fee of $20. No big deal though, you'll get a great workout and meet tons of new friends at this event!

DALLAS, TX 2008

NATIONALS!!!!!!!

A Team:
Finished 9th overall out of 48 teams in Division I.
Defensive specialist, Mikaela Knutson, had traveling problems with the airlines and missed the first day of play. Outside hitter and president of the club, Katy DeBruin still out with a broken hand. Senior middle blocker, Katie Grogan, hurt on second day with a knee injury. Diagnosis still to come.

B Team:
Finished 6th overall out of 12 teams in Division III.
Jessica Damasco had traveling problems with the airlines and missed the first day of play.

Vegas Tournament: March 20-23

The A team finished fifth overall. Outside hitter, Katy DeBruin out with a broken hand. Players Alex Schleck (setter) and Jessica Foley (outside hitter) made the All-Tournament Team.

The B team finished fourth in the silver bracket.

Fundraising Galore!

The fundraising run started as soon as the semester began. The team started out the first weekend back to school by reffing the Cactus Classic Junior Volleyball Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The club reffed at multiple locations for girls ranging from 12-18 years old. This fundraiser earned the team approximately $1300, a huge help for one weekend of work!!

This upcoming weekend, on February 16th, the team will be holding their first annual golf tournament at Arizona National. After tons of hard work from Marti Larriva, tournament head, and all the girls, it seems that the tournament should bring in approximately $4000.

SDSU Tournament

The SDSU Women's Club Volleyball Team held a friendship tournament this past weekend. Nineteen of the UofA players and 4 coaches traveled to San Diego to participate.

The UofA B team had a rough start to the season but showed great potential as they learn more about the college club game. The UofA A team finished the tournament in first place after beating SDSU in the finals.

A special thank you to the families and friends who helped the team out by giving us places to stay! We appreciate it more than you know!!

More Fundraising...

After working at the Desert Thunder Rodeo a few weeks ago in October, the girls have now earned enough money to start making purchases. The team collected money and tickets, organized the parking lot, and sold food at concession stands to earn around $3000. New volleyballs for practice and a third set of uniforms will be ordered this season due to NIRSA regulations for the libero jersey.

First Fundraiser of the Season!

The team embarked on their first fundraising event of the season. Yesterday, 14 of the girls directed traffic in the parking lot for the Kiim FM Country Music Festival. The next major fundraising event will be the Rodeo held in October.

Who We Are...

We are a student run club of two teams which hold mandatory practices every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday night in the Student Recreation Center from 8:00pm - 10:00pm. We compete under the direction of a coach in various tournaments throughout the school year. We travel to Las Vegas for Regionals, this year to Dallas for Nationals, and to other out of state tournaments generally in California. If you are interested in playing in a competitive environment while having a good time, please contact one of the officers.
